A leading media and entertainment law firm is seeking a 4PQE+ Video Games Associate to join their dynamic and growing team. The Opportunity
As part of the firm's continued growth, an exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Video Games team. In this role, you will work closely with the Head of Video Games, advising on a wide array of legal matters in the sector. You will have the chance to mentor junior team members while advising clients on development and publishing agreements, game licensing, content compliance, and studio investments. You'll also support clients navigating VR, AR, eSports gaming, and the evolving technology landscape.
Key Responsibilities:
Transactional Expertise
- Negotiating game and content licensing agreements
- Advising on development, publishing, and distribution agreements
- Handling game merchandising, sponsorship, and endorsement deals
- Structuring game music licensing and commissioning
- Advising on UK video games tax relief applications
- Supporting project financing, including crowdfunding and tax credit investments
Regulation & Compliance
- Offering expert guidance on game content compliance and clearance
- Advising on data protection, privacy, and security, with particular focus on cross-border data transfers
- Navigating consumer compliance laws, especially related to children's gaming
- Providing detailed advice on the regulation of digital content, virtual currency, and AI in game development
Intellectual Property & Brand Protection:
- Advising on trade mark registration, copyright issues, and patent protection in the games sector
- Formulating brand protection strategies and enforcing intellectual property rights across multiple jurisdictions
- Handling copyright infringement and licensing disputes
This role offers a fantastic chance to work on high-profile projects with top-tier clients, including global distribution deals, game studio investments, and content licensing agreements. Requirements:
- You will have at least 4 years PQE in gaming, media, or interactive entertainment law
- Strong knowledge of video game licensing, IP protection, and data privacy
- A commercially minded individual with strong transactional expertise
- The ability to provide high-level client service across a broad range of industries
