Which Route is Right for You?

75% of new solicitors qualified via the traditional LPC route in 2022/23 (sra.org.uk). But that’s starting to change. ⚖️
The Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE) is more than just a new exam – it’s a shift in how we approach becoming a solicitor. Unlike the LPC, which ties you to one firm, the SQE gives candidates the flexibility to gain qualifying work experience (QWE) across multiple employers.
For law firms, this expands the talent pool by allowing candidates from a wider variety of backgrounds. Instead of just those who’ve followed the traditional LPC route, firms can now hire candidates with experience across different environments – from boutique firms to in-house teams. This could really change how law firms recruit in the future.
For candidates, the SQE means a quicker, more affordable route into practice, with fewer hurdles than the LPC. But there are still some sticking points. Some might prefer the LPC because it's familiar and well-established, and it offers a clear-cut path to qualification.
The LPC might still dominate for now, but the SQE is definitely making waves. With flexibility and affordability on its side, it’s clear why many are jumping on board. But for others, the familiarity and clear path of the LPC still feel like the safer bet.
🤔 So, where do you stand? Is the SQE the way forward, or does the LPC still appeal?
