When Work Gets Personal
24 Jul, 20245 minutesDo you wonder what it’s like to be on the other side of the desk?
Most lawyers must work at learning what the client experience is like. But for some in the legal profession, they already know, because they’ve been there.
A famous example is Jeff Cohen, who gave us the Truffle Shuffle in The Goonies before growing up and becoming a top Hollywood lawyer. There are immigration lawyers who have struggled to get their visa and criminal lawyers who chose a legal career directly because of their personal experience of the justice system.
Having direct experience of the struggles a client is facing is a unique advantage. If this is your route to becoming a lawyer, it’s worth highlighting this when you apply for jobs and including it in your cover letter or personal statement. It’s also something to talk about in your interview.
Law firms are often looking to know the person behind the CV and what motivates them. Your personal story can give you the edge in a competitive legal market.
